マイケル・ジャクソンの6thアルバムで、人類史上最も売れた(※)とされているアルバム「Thriller」(1982年)に収録されている曲です。
同アルバムからの5枚目のシングルとしても、1983年にリリースされました。

作詞はカーペンターズの作品で知られるジョン・ベティス、作曲はTOTOのキーボーディストスティーヴ・ポーカロによるものです。

※アルバム「スリラー」の売上枚数には諸説あり、2017年に全米での総売り上げが3300万枚(ストリーミング配信含む)を記録したことがアメリカレコード協会(RIAA)によって認定されています(33×プラチナディスク)。
所属レコード会社のソニー・ミュージックレコーズによると全世界の総売り上げは1億5000万枚以上とされていますが、その数字は「Thriller」という曲名が入ったすべてのアルバム・シングルの総計なのでは？との見方（the true sales of Michael Jackson’s Thriller）もあります。
英語版wikipediaで集計されているbest-selling albumsを見ても、7000万枚前後が妥当と思われます。

歌詞の意味と解釈

タイトル「ヒューマン・ネイチャー」を訳すと「人間性」となります。

下の訳では「人の性(さが)」と訳しましたが、歌詞には主人公(マイケル自身と思われる)の「本能のおもむくままに夜の街に遊びに行きたい」という願望を持つスーパースターの孤独が歌われています。

街を"彼女"と擬人化したり、アップル(禁断の果実)・Him(神)など聖書的なモチーフが使われたりと、詩的な情緒を感じさせる曲です。
