アメリカ出身の兄妹によるデュオ カーペンターズの、4thアルバム「A Song For You」(1972年) に収録されている曲です。

1973年9月にシングルとしてリリースされ、ビルボードチャートNo.1に輝きました。

意外なことに、この曲は当初シングル曲となる予定はなかったそうです。

しかし、1972年にカントリー・シンガーのリン・アンダーソンがカバーし、カントリーチャートでヒットさせた為、シングルとしてリリースされることになりました。

歌詞の意味と解釈

タイトル「トップ・オブ・ザ・ワールド」を直訳すると “世界の頂点" となりますが、曲の中では「愛する人と一緒にいられる無上の喜び」を表現した言葉として使われています。
