ザ・ビートルズの7作目のスタジオアルバム「Revolver」に収録されている曲です。
『Eleanor Rigby』との両A面シングルとして、1966年8月にリリースされています。
アニメ映画「イエロー・サブマリン」のテーマソングにもなりました。
リンゴ・スターがメインボーカルをとっている曲の中で、唯一シングルとなった曲です。
歌詞の意味と解釈
ポール・マッカートニーが子供向けに書いた曲といわれ、歌詞ではおとぎ話のような「架空の黄色い潜水艦での生活」がのびのびと描かれています。
リンゴ・スターの素朴なボーカルも味わいがあり、間奏のコーラスや効果音もメンバーが楽しみながら録音していたようです。
アート性の高いアルバム「Revolver」の中でこの曲だけ浮いている気はしますが、曲単体としてみれば、ビートルズの懐の深さを感じる名曲だと思います。
