歌詞の意味と解釈

タイトルの「ギヴ・イット・アウェイ」は “くれてやれ“、"あげちまえ" という意味です。

ものを多く持つよりも人に多く与える方が豊かだという、アンソニー・キーディスの人生哲学がそのまま歌になった曲です。

ところどころエロティックな言葉を含みながらも、リベラル（自由・平等主義）な主張は今聞いても古びていません。

・Bob Marley　ボブ・マーリー。ジャマイカのレゲエミュージシャン。アーティストのみならず、世界の多くの政治家・思想家に影響を与えました。

・River　
歌詞は俳優のリヴァー・フェニックス（River Phoenix）に掛けていると思われます。
メンバー（アンソニーとフリー）と浅からぬ親交があったと言われていますが、1993年にオーバードーズで死去しています。
レッチリの『Transcending』は彼に捧げられた曲だそうです。
