1971年3月にジョン・レノン／プラスティック・オノ・バンド名義でシングルリリースされた曲です。

ジョン・レノンの1枚目のソロアルバム「John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band」(邦題：ジョンの魂) の2000年のリマスター盤に、ボーナストラックとして収録されました。

 

歌詞の意味と解釈

タイトル「パワー・トゥー・ザ・ピープル」を訳すと “人々に力を" となります。

しかし、ミュージックビデオにも表れているとおり、この曲は一般市民に対し「抗議の声を上げよう」というメッセージを持った政治的な曲となっています。

この曲がリリースされた当時、アメリカはベトナム戦争の真っただ中であり、ジョンは積極的な平和活動を展開していた時期です（1969年には、平和を訴えかけるパフォーマンス「ベッド・イン」や、ベトナム戦争への抗議として大英帝国勲章の返上などをしています）。

また、同年には労働者階級を歌った『Working Class Hero』をリリースしています。

その点から、タイトルの意味合いとしては「無力な民衆に自由と権利を！（その為に立ち上がろう）」というのが適切かと思われます。

ただし、現在では日本でもCM曲として使われたり、フジロックフェスティバルの終演後の定番曲になっていたりと、より広くライトな意味で「パワー・トゥー・ザ・ピープル」という言葉が使われているのを感じます。
