Yes – Close To The Edge
イエス – クローズ・トゥ・ジ・エッジ（邦題：危機）
イギリスのプログレッシヴ・ロックバンド イエスの5thアルバム「Close To The Edge」(1972年 邦題：危機) のタイトル曲です。
18分を超える長尺の曲ですが、イエスの代表曲としてだけでなく、プログレッシヴロックを代表する名曲として評価されています。
曲は4つの楽章に分けられており、ロックというよりクラシック音楽に近い形式となっています。
ジョン・アンダーソンが当時読んでいたトールキンの「指輪物語」、愛聴していたジャン・シベリウスの交響曲第6番と第7番がインスピレーションになったそうです。
歌詞の意味と解釈
歌詞はドイツの作家ヘルマン・ヘッセの小説「シッダールタ」に影響されているそうで、人類の歴史や自分の心の動きを抽象的に描き出したような観念的な世界が広がっています。
（シッダールタは紀元前のインドが舞台で、主人公が悟りの境地を求める物語で、彼が最終的に行き着く先も"川"でした）
ジョン・アンダーソン曰く、最後のヴァース(Close to the edge, down by a river. Down at the end, round by the corner）は、彼が見た夢(あの世へ旅立つ夢)がもとになっており、その夢以来死への恐怖がなくなった、そうです。
これらを踏まえると、難解なこの曲の歌詞は、無理やり要約すると「危機的状況や死への恐怖をも乗り越える高い精神性(解脱)」を歌ったもの、と解釈できるかもしれません。
