ニューヨークで結成された5人組ロックバンド ザ・ストロークスのデビューアルバム「Is This It」に収録されている曲です。

アメリカ版の「Is This It」には収録されず、代わりに『When It Started』が収録されました。
これは、2001年アメリカ同時多発テロの後の状況で、「New York City cops, but they ain’t too smart」＝（ニューヨーク市警はあんまり賢くない）という歌詞が不適切だった為、と言われています。

歌詞の意味と解釈

歌詞の内容は、ニューヨーク市警をこき下ろした曲というわけではなさそうです。

大まかな歌詞のストーリーは、「ある青年がニューヨークでニーナという女性(売春婦かクスリの売人？) と付き合い、道を外すものの、立ち直るためにニーナと縁を切ってニューヨークから出ていこう」というものだと思われます。

「ニューヨーク市警はあまり賢くない」と言うフレーズは、主人公に向けて、ニーナが何度も口にした言葉のようです。
