Iron Maiden – 2 Minutes To Midnight
アイアン・メイデン – トゥー・ミニッツ・トゥ・ミッドナイト（邦題：悪夢の最終兵器(絶滅2分前)）

 

1980年代のメタルブームを担ったイギリスのメタルバンド アイアン・メイデンの5thアルバム「Powerslave」に収録されている曲です。

同アルバムの先行シングルとして、1984年8月にリリースされました。

 

歌詞の意味と解釈

タイトル「２ミニッツ・トゥー・ミッドナイト」は、直訳すると"真夜中まであと２分"ですが、「ミッドナイト」とは世界終末時計における"世界の終わり“を意味します。

歌詞は、世界戦争や大量殺戮を誘発させようとする、危険な思想をもった指導者の視点で書かれているようです。

メンバーによると「冷戦を直接的に批判する曲ではない」そうですが、エグイ内容の歌詞と「終末時計」というメッセージは、リスナーに政治的な危機意識を持たせます。

代表曲を手軽に網羅するにはこれが一番ですが、1996年リリースで音質がイマイチなので、その場合は、再発されたベスト盤「Somewhere back in Time」(主に80年代) か「From Fear To Eternity The Best Of 1990-2010」を選ぶ方がいいかもしれません。
