ボーカリストで詩人のジム・モリソンが在籍していたロックバンド ザ・ドアーズの1stアルバム「The Doors」(邦題：ハートに火をつけて　1967年) の最後に収録されている曲です。

11分を越える長尺の曲で、前半部分と後半部分に分けてレコーディングされたものを繋ぎ合わせる形で完成しています。

また、ベトナム戦争を題材にしたフランシス・コッポラ監督の大作映画「地獄の黙示録」(1979年公開) に使用されました。

歌詞の意味と解釈

歌詞は抽象的で難解であり、ドイツの哲学者フロイトの言葉との関連性が指摘されています。

また、ギリシア神話のオイディプスを思わせる「父親殺し」「母親との姦通」などのショッキングな描写もあります。

ジム・モリソンは「恋人との別れ」の曲として書き始めたらしいですが、歌詞の世界は広がりを見せ、「少年から大人になる事」「ベトナム戦争」「ヒッピーとドラッグカルチャー」など、様々に解釈されているようです。
